Watchmen directed by Zack Snyder is set in alternative 1985 - a time in which the world is nearing a nuclear war. There is also a plot to eliminate a group of ex-crime fighters. But the question arises - why? Two of the ex-crime fighters take it upon themselves to find out the cause and do the remedial action. After 300 Zack seems to have another winner in hand. The visuals are simply great and he has successfully adapted the book into the film without any hitch.
Watchmen movie is an exact adaptation of the book with some changes towards the end. There has been criticisms over this but when you are following a book there are bound to be some changes here and there to make a good movie out of it. The films just as the book - the Comedian being killed in a tense action scene and for the next 160 minutes we are forced to remain glued to the screens. The scene is followed by a beautiful collage which helps us get introduced to the Minutemen and the rest of this story.
The movie is really good and has been appreciated in all circles. The main strong point of the film is the casting. It is perfect and you will fall in love with each one of them. Even the smaller characters do their roles well such as the news vendor and the reading boy.
The main characters in the film get introduced as the film progresses and each one is given maximum screen space possible so that the audience gets acquainted with each one of them. The performances of the actors are really good and Patrick Wilson deserves a special mention. His role as Dan Dreiber has earned him accolades all over. Malin Akerman as Silk Spectre II was also very impressive.
The only drawback in the film is that the action scenes are much lengthier than what is depicted in the book but never will you feel bored. The film has been given an 18+ classification in the UK. There is a bit of frontal nudity in the film too.
The special effects are the USP of the movie. The characters have been well designed and Dr. Manhattan looks brilliant in the movie. The mask of Rorschach is fun to look at throughout the film. The soundtrack of the movie is pretty good and has music from that period. The music is apt for the film but people might not like it a couple of years from now. The songs will die a natural death with time. The movie is doing well at the box office and has impressed all cine goers.
Watchmen has become very popular among the audience and it will be a crime to miss this one. All the reviews are singing praise for Zack Snyder for bringing out such a masterpiece after 300.
