Solar Power In Homes

By: Adrian Fletcher.

Solar power and many other renewable energy systems are gaining more exposure for a couple of main reasons. The first reason is that traditional fossil fuels that typically power our homes are becoming expensive. Indeed, constant increases in utility bills has caused people to look for alternatives. And solar power kits and other forms of renewable energy offer a viable alternative.

The second reason that these types of systems are becoming popular is because of the environment. A renewable energy system is exactly that. If you use the Sun's energy or wind power, you will not deplete it. It will not diminish the more people use it.

In fact, you could accurately say that by not taking advantage of Sun and wind power, we are wasting these free energy resources. And by building systems that take advantage of these resources we do less damage to the environment than burning fossil fuels.

Solar power kits are mainly concerned with providing heat and electricity for the home.

Heat and electricity are essential to make a house a home. Heat provides physical warmth and makes water hot. Hot water is needed for baths and showers. You use it to wash clothes and dishes. Electricity powers all our household appliances and most likely provides light to your home at night.

Solar power kits use a passive approach to providing hot water to the home. They rely on the sun warmth to heat the water that is then passed into the homes plumbing system. However the most common form of solar power kit is one that uses solar panels.

Solar panels are a number of photovoltaic (PV) cells lined up in series or parallel. A PV cell is made of silicon, that reacts with sunlight to through off an electron. When a number of PV cells are lined up together this causes a current to flow. This is direct current (DC) that can be used to power appliances.

DC can be stored in a battery or it can be transformed into alternating current (AC). AC is used in the home to power many of our household appliances like the TV, oven, refrigerator, home theater and many others.

Many people can set up a solar power system or a combination of systems but are always reliant on the Sun. This is one of the drawbacks of solar power and is another reason why it is always recommended to have a contingency plan should the Sun not shine or the day is cloudy. Most people have the utility company as their contingency plan but if you really want to take renewable energy to heart you should think about wind power.

Developing a wind generator is easy to do in the suburban home as the natural resource, the wind, is likely to be there to some extent. If you install a solar powered system and a wind generator in your home then you have an energy generating solution come rain, wind or shine (so to speak).

With this said, it makes sense to stay with a grid solution until you understand renewable energy systems enough or are confident that they can provide all your energy needs.
