Overplayed, But On Screen

By: Nelson Pellew

The thin digital line between what is real and what is fantasy has been crossed. It is inevitable, perhaps, given the pervasive nature of cinema and cinematic language, but are compelled to cast ourselves in the lead role of our respective life-movies. And indeed, we assuredly re-cast ourselves, moment to moment, in such a fashion that we are always played by the best-looking, best-dressed actors imaginable. If as the Bard famously put it, life's a stage and we but players, then it stands to reason we would be infatuated with the most impressive, beautiful players.
While it does run the risk of being a fatuous obsession, there is something to be learned. There is some kind of feedback to be gleaned from our popular celebrity obsession. For one, it is a kind of predictive programming. That is, we can understand our respective societal roles by understanding the roles our beloved celebrities play. The adulterous wife, the noble husband, the wild libertine, the reckless child star. How can we hope to understand ourselves if not through a reinforced set of behaviors, brought to scintillating life by the very best actors?
In addition to a few grains of salt, the best trait to keep in mind is a sense of humor. Taking oneself too seriously is tantamount to self-parody. In this case, it may be a wise plan of action to avail yourself with some kind of device that can actually place you within a movie. This kind of virtual transplantation is possible thanks to companies like Yoostar and the like. Through a clever use of green screen technology, you can cross over and star in your favorite feature presentation. The marvels of the modern age never cease.
While supplying you and your cohorts with endless hours of entertainment, the technology makes it possible to understand the simile of life as film all the more clearly. While you are laughing at the sight of you dodging blows from Sylvester Stallone, you can clearly see how really, the main feature is not Rocky, rather, it's you. The lure and luster of cinematic language is the appeal of being watched and appreciated. Perhaps this is a more essential aspect of this cinematic process. We want to be watched, adored, and appreciated.
What is surprising is how seldom we realize the insidious power of film. Moreover, we fail to see how pervasive the reach of its language is. At every turn we are bombarded by the message of movies. What we have longed for since the inception of cinema seems to be here. No longer on the fringe of the possible, being able to enter and interact with our favorite films is now a reality.
